Overview
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage has emerged as a leading emission reduction strategy. The strategy encompasses a multitude of technologies from capture to transport to well injection. At the injection well, carbon dioxide can be reused to stimulate depleted reservoirs or to geologically sequester the carbon dioxide. Regulatory underground injection programs provide oversight to ensure carbon dioxide and other gases do not escape as fugitive emissions where they can pose an environmental threat or compromise existing producing, orphaned and abandoned wells. To meet the rigorous regulatory standards, wells must be engineered and tested for prolonged exposure to carbon dioxide under downhole conditions, ensuring that well integrity is not compromised. To protect the environment special care must be taken throughout the entire well lifecycle, from reservoir selection and well completion to plug and abandonment.
